To support cancer research and awareness through fundraising and education. To support local families who are battling cancer by providing them with funding, needed resources and assistance. The idea for this event was born out of the desire to remember our father and do something to fight the deadly disease that took his life, lung cancer. There were many times during the course of Stan's battle where there seemed to be this awful choice between leaving his family financially damaged or getting the best cancer care available. We believe that no one should be faced with that choice and we hope we can help all people, especially those in our local community, get the best care available and beat their cancer! On May 5, 2007, at 10 am, we held our first 5K & Family Fun Run event at the Newport Beach Marina in East Moriches, NY. This day was significant, because it marked the year anniversary of our father's passing. Instead of morning his loss, we wanted to celebrate his life, and honor him by fighting the disease that took him from us. That first event held in May of 2007 was informal, just family & friends. We still raised $1,624 for the American Cancer Society. In May of 2008 our 5K event showed tremendous growth. Flyers went out to all residents of Newport Beach, and we more than tripled the funds raised, $5,684. With each year the foundation hopes to gradually grow and raise even more money to help fund the battle against cancer that effects so many of us. The money raised during the Stan Wong 5K for Cancer 2008 went directly to the American Cancer Society designated for research only. $600 went to supports the ACS Hope Lodge in NYC. The Hope Lodge offers free, temporary housing for cancer patients and their families or caregivers while they undergo treatment in NYC. |
